Half of all ACC-funded Cost of Treatment (CoTR) consultations were done via telehealth during New Zealand’s national lockdown. ACC enabled telehealth for 11 new providers in response to the Covid-19 pandemic and around 70 percent of providers bill under the CoTR regulations.

Eighty percent of patients surveyed on their telehealth experience by Nelson Marlborough DHB said they would use telehealth again. The average number of telehealth appointments delivered weekly by the DHB quadrupled during the national lockdown.

A Virtual reality medical scenario is helping Kiwi clinicians practice caring for Covid-19 positive patients. The scenarios use new learning software created by ShowHow in Wellington and a course designed by Capital & Coast DHB.

Clinicians at Waitematā DHB conducted 10,000 telehealth appointments in one week in August. Every clinic room is equipped with video capabiility and a new telehealth pod is being trialed at North Shore Hospital.

Yariv Doron is a child psychiatrist at Taranaki DHB and clinical lead for the DHB’s Business Intelligence Group. He sits on the NZ Telehealth Leadership Group, manages medical school students studying psychiatry and finds time to do research for the Taranaki Health Foundation. Originally from Israel, he now lives in New Zealand with his wife and three children.
